Description

Portuguese is acquired across Africa, Europe and South America both as L1 (Pires & Rothman 2009; Pires, Rothman and Santos 2011; Gonçalves et al. 2018; Teixeira & Alves 2022) and as an L2 (Madeira 2016; Flores, Rinke & Rato 2017; Flores et al. 2019). While Portuguese has a rather uniform written standard, ultimately the varieties acquired and the contexts they are acquired in, are vastly different. This plurality of varieties brings its challenges, particularly for controlled settings of L2 acquisition (Formato 2018). At the same time, this situation invites an in-depth comparison and promises interesting findings on the nature of language acquisition in general.

This workshop aims at bringing together researchers working on L1 and L2 acquisition of Portuguese in uncontrolled and controlled settings. The goal is to discuss current developments in the field and to uncover possible cross-varietal implications from different acquisition scenarios. Contributions may address L1 and L2 acquisition of any domain of grammar in controlled and uncontrolled settings. Comparative work across varieties, but also with other languages, is especially welcome, as is work on the acquisition of Portuguese in African countries.

Keynote speakers:

  • Susana Correia (Universidade Nova de Lisboa)
  • Elaine Grolla (USP)
  • Esther Rinke (University of Frankfurt)
